Term Definition Examples
Visual Effects (VFX) The process of creating, manipulating, and integrating computer-generated imagery (CGI) and live-action footage to create realistic or imaginary visual elements. Explosions, creatures, environments, and other digital effects in movies like Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, and Avatar.
CGI Computer-generated imagery created with the use of 3D modeling software and computer graphics techniques. The dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, the dragons in Game of Thrones, and the robots in Transformers.
Compositing The process of combining multiple visual elements into a single image or scene, often involving color correction and other adjustments to achieve a seamless final result. The lightsabers in Star Wars, the flying broomsticks in Harry Potter, and the Hulk in Avengers: Endgame.
Special Effects (SFX) The practical or physical effects created on set using props, makeup, and other techniques to enhance the realism of a scene. The explosions and car chases in the Fast and Furious franchise, the prosthetics in The Lord of the Rings, and the costumes in Star Trek.
